    Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the bioeconomy’s latest product innovations and research findings at Hannover Messe. Other types of events, such as the International Bioeconomy Conference, promote the establishment of international partnerships and drive economic change towards a bioeconomy.

    Nineteen research projects currently being funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) will be presented at the joint stand “Showcasing the Bioeconomy” at Hannover Messe 2019. We are co-exhibitors with our cluster partners.

  • Europe's microtechnology industry is attuned to growth

    Global economic, social and political developments as well as technological disruptions like the digital transformation do not leave the representatives of the European microtechnology industry unaffected. Nevertheless, growth forecasts for the next three years are distinctively positive. More than 80 percent of the companies expect to increase sales in the period from 2017 to 2019. The number of employees is also expected to rise in more than three-quarters of the companies. Increasing growth rates during the last four years are likely to have given rise to this optimism in the microtechnology industry: since 2013, the share of companies that have been able to increase their turnover and their number of employees has risen steadily.

For this reason, the German Academy of Science and Engineering, acatech, will present its Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index on April 25, 2017, at the Hannover Trade Show (HMI). The Index provides guidance for companies seeking to develop a tailor-made roadmap for the Industrie 4.0 journey. Additionally, the Industrie 4.0 Maturity Center is being established to support companies in applying the approach.

    CPO certification helps evaluate openness of IT systems

    Digitalization is making openness in the linking of IT solutions increasingly important. The Code of PLM Openness (CPO), developed by the ProSTEP iViP Association, supplies a concrete approach for achieving precisely that. Fraunhofer IAO has now developed an effective certification for companies, which helps them comply with the CPO criteria.

    A new report launched today by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) looks into the opportunities and challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, also referred to as Industry 4.0, to accelerate the transition towards sustainable energy. The report, produced in collaboration with the German Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) and the Indonesian think tank Sustainability & Resilience.Co (, also provides key recommendations for future policies.

  • OCSiAl to set up the world's largest nanotube production facility in Luxembourg

    The Ministry of the Economy and the Ministry of Finance of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and OCSiAl, a manufacturer of advanced materials, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the construction of a production facility for single wall carbon nanotubes with an annual capacity up to 250 tonnes and a centre for applied nanotechnology. The first stage of the facility is scheduled for launch in 2020. This manufacturing and R&D complex will become the world’s largest centre for the synthesis and industrial application of single wall carbon nanotubes, which are one of the most promising new materials.

    The EU wants to help European SMEs to catch up with smart industry. To provide specific support, the EU has initiated a pan-European survey on “Smart Engineering”. The research project’s objective is to identify the actual situation of European companies on their way towards Industry 4.0, to sum up all national funding initiatives and to determine the actual demand of SMEs. The project is jointly conducted by 15 research institutions and companies from seven countries – among them the Institut für Integrierte Produktion Hannover (IPH).

    When manufacturing optical lenses, every detail counts. In order to increrase stability of manufacturing processes while making them faster and more cost-efficient at the same time, Fraunhofer researchers are developing tools and production processes for optical elements of new glass materials. At the Photonics West trade fair in San Francisco from January 28 to February 2, 2017, Fraunhofer experts will be showing how Industry 4.0 approaches can improve the development and manufacture of glass optics and how companies in the optics market can profit from new techonologies and digital tools, like simulations on smart glasses or tablets.

    An interdisciplinary team of scientists from the University of Göttingen, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig and Bogor Agricultural University in Indonesia has now performed a complete and multidisciplinary assessment of all ecosystem functions in oil palm plantations as compared to lowland forests. They found that in oil palm plantations, eleven out of 14 ecosystem functions showed a net decrease, some with an irreversible global impact.

  • Successful cooperation with Japan

    In 2016 the IVAM Microtechnology Network intensified its activities to improve networking between Japanese and German medical technology companies. Within a collaboration project the cooperation between companies from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and the Japanese Fukushima Prefecture was brought forward.

  • TACNET 4.0 - German Industry Consortium Develops System for Real Time Industrial Networks

    14 German companies and organizations have combined forces in TACNET 4.0 - Tactile Internet, a project to create a standard system for real time industrial communications. The so called "tactile internet," based on 5G wireless technology, is being further developed with the support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in this project for the digitalization of production and robotics. Focusing on the needs of the market, the project serves as a basis for a wide range of industrial applications. The project is coordinated by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), together with Nokia Bell Labs.

  • The digital transformation is no disruption to the microtechnology industry

    How the microtechnology industry understands the "digital transformation".

    The advancing digitalization is expected to lead to major changes in industry, economy and society in the years to come and is perceived as a great challenge. The innovative microtechnology industry, which has always played a key role in technological advances, does not think of the digital transformation as a disruption. According to the data survey of the IVAM Microtechnology Network, the microtechnology industry approaches digitalization in specific projects and by means of product and process innovation. Two-thirds of the European companies and eighty percent of research institutions are addressing digitalization issues in one way or another. But almost a third of the industry representatives do not regard the digital transformation as a new development as they have used or implemented new digital technologies in the past already.
