From June 26 to 29, the laser community met again at the LASER World of PHOTONICS in Munich. The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT was there with more than 50 exhibits from the various fields of applied laser technology and beam-source development: This year the spectrum ranged from diode and fiber lasers to new measurement technology all the way to complete machines for additive processes or even laser systems for space.

The Ministry of the Economy and the Ministry of Finance of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and OCSiAl, a manufacturer of advanced materials, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the construction of a production facility for single wall carbon nanotubes with an annual capacity up to 250 tonnes and a centre for applied nanotechnology. The first stage of the facility is scheduled for launch in 2020. This manufacturing and R&D complex will become the world’s largest centre for the synthesis and industrial application of single wall carbon nanotubes, which are one of the most promising new materials.

The EU wants to help European SMEs to catch up with smart industry. To provide specific support, the EU has initiated a pan-European survey on “Smart Engineering”. The research project’s objective is to identify the actual situation of European companies on their way towards Industry 4.0, to sum up all national funding initiatives and to determine the actual demand of SMEs. The project is jointly conducted by 15 research institutions and companies from seven countries – among them the Institut für Integrierte Produktion Hannover (IPH).

Having spent the majority of my career to date in the biopharmaceutical industry across multiple roles spanning from sales and sales management to commercializing university basic research, I am curious about the possibility of developing a “better” business model. That is, I am interested in exploring the opportunities to bring life changing therapies to market less expensively and in less time than it typically takes.

A business model that is built for an external focus will become increasing important as technological complexity increases.
